Whitefish Dunes State Park
Mushrooms and Other Fungi at

Hundreds of fungus varieties of many different colors grow at Whitefish Dunes State Park.

Though we recommend that you learn as much as you can enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of each mushroom, you will notice that no mention is made here about edibility of the listed fungi. Some are edible and others are deadly, and it's difficult to tell one from another. Whole books have been written on the subject. Use extreme caution!

Fall fungus at Whitefish DunesThough picking plants in a state park is prohibited, gathering mushrooms (considered a fruit of the plant) is allowed. When collecting edible species, do not trample other plants and do not rip mushrooms out of the ground. Use a knife and leave the stem base in the soil. Never take more than you need.

The list of fungi at Whitefish Dunes has been growing since volunteer mushroom expert Charlotte Lukes began documenting fungi here in 1990. In fact, it's so long we've divided it into three pages:

We expect the list to continue to grow.
