Aldo Leopold Legacy Trail System Old Abe State Trail
The Old Abe State Trail is a cooperative effort between the State of
Wisconsin and Chippewa County. This paved 19.5-mile trail connects Lake
Wissota State Park and Brunet Island State Park in Cornell. The trail,
an abandoned railroad grade, has been developed for bicyclists, snowmobiles,
walkers (including wheelchair users), and in-line skaters. The southern
portion of the trail is developed for horseback riding.
The trail winds through agricultural and forest land while following
the undeveloped shoreline of the Chippewa River. This trail features an
abundance of wildlife and natural beauty, with many historical sites along
the way. Eventually the Old Abe Trail will connect with the Chippewa River
Trail in Eau Claire and the Red Cedar Trail in Menomonie, making this
a 70-mile trail system.
