Kettle Moraine State Forest--Northern Unit
Service Opportunities
Litter Pickup
There is always a need to help keep the roads and recreation
areas in the forest free of litter. Special litter pick up projects can
be set up for a group, or groups and individuals may help with the big
spring clean up in April.
Trail Improvements
Trail work involves physically demanding efforts: erosion control, laying
new trail tread, brushing back bushes, and adding new amenities like benches
and sign posts.
Exotic Species Control

Garlic mustard in bloom
DNR Photo
Several species of plants are invading part of the forest and taking
over natural habitats. Help is needed in controlling these very agressive
invaders. In early spring, garlic mustard (right) needs to be hand-pulled
from forest areas. Summer is the time to remove purple loosestrife from
wetlands. Buckthorn and honey suckle needs to be cut down in late fall.
Special work projects can be set up for groups or youth working on special
awards (for example: Boy Scout Eagle Award or Girl Scout Gold or Silver
Award).
Special Events
Special events are fun-filled large events offered for the general public.
Volunteers lead activities, greet people, keep the grounds clean and serve
refreshments. Training is provided.
