Coming Events at Kohler-Andrae State Park

Several events are scheduled throughout the year at Kohler-Andrae. Scroll down for a list of all upcoming events. Most events are free, but all vehicles entering the park need to have a vehicle admission sticker.

Wednesday-Saturday, July 1-4, 2009

Fourth of July in the Park. American flag display throughout the campground. Campers are urged to decorate their campsites in a patriotic mode all week long. Park campground. All day.

Monday, July 6, 2009

Figure Out Feathers. Youngsters ages 6-8 working toward their Explorer patch are invited to join volunteer Paula Olig on a hike to find and identify feathers. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed. Meet outside Sanderling Nature Center. 9:30 a.m.

Walk The Park's Woodlands. Hike the Woodlands Dunes Trail with Drew Morris. Learn about tree identity, age of trees and other interesting facts. Family hike. No pets allowed. Meet at the trailhead near the playground. 10 a.m.

  • Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants. Come hike with John Johnston to search for these unique and interesting plants found at Kohler-Andrae and learn about their uses. Wear comfortable shoes. Hike will last about an hour. Meet at the closed gate west of the camp host site. 2 p.m.
  • Backpacking 101. Sharon Dziengel shares backpacking tips and information on suggested equipment. No pets allowed. Sanderling Nature Center. 7 p.m.

Rock Collecting For Fun. Join Ed Mindock for a presentation on rock collecting as a hobby. A hands-on approach to beginning and understanding rock collecting and having fun doing it. All ages welcome. Free program. Vehicle admission sticker required. Meet at the Sanderling Nature Center. 2 p.m.

Great Lakes Sport Fishing. Hear a member of the Sheboygan Area Great Lakes Sport Fishermen speak on salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. The presentation will include the history of salmon fishing, information on the five species in Lake Michigan and a display of tackle and gear used for this sport. Free program. Meet at the Sanderling Nature Center. 7 p.m.

  • Summer Candlelight Hike. Enjoy a self-guided hike along the beach and wander the sand dunes along the cordwalk. The trail is lit with tiki torches for this annual summer event. Refreshments served at Sanderling Nature Center. Sorry, no pets or strollers allowed on the hike. Park at Sanderling Nature Center or North Beach lots. 8:30-10:30 p.m.

  • Dutch Oven and Outdoor Cooking. Noon - 1:30 p.m. Join park volunteers for an outdoor cooking demonstration using recipes from the park cookbook Cooking with Friends. This will be a great apportunity to pick up some tips and gather ideas for your next camping trip or cookout. Amphitheater. Noon - 1:30 p.m.
  • Kite Building Workshop. Join in the fun of making and decorating a pocket sled kite, then head right out the door to fly it! The workshop is best for children 12 and under; 4-year olds will need parental help. There is a $4 charge per kite kit. Call the park office to register for a session. Meet near the outdoor shelter. 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The Sands of Kasp - Sand Stories, Games and Crafts. Join volunteer naturalist Chris Lilek as she reveals the history and source of Kasp beach sand through stories, games and sand painting. Smoky Hollow Muzzle Loader Encampment. Visitors to Kohler-Andrae are invited to join camp members as they re-enact life as it was in the early to mid 1800s. Demonstrations and activities happen as interest develops.Spend an hour or the entire day viewing activities reminiscent of the frontier days. South picnic area. Noon-evening Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday.

Bats 'N Humans Need Each Other. Bats are one of the best friends we humans ever had. Janet Raddatz will share her knowledge of these special creatures. Following the presentation, join Janet and Andy Raddatz for a walk around the park with a bat detector that will translate inaudible, high-frequency bat sounds into humanly audible clicks and chirps. This presentation is for the entire family, especially the children. Meet at the Sanderling Nature Center. 7 p.m.

Universe In The Park. The UW-Madison Astronomy Department begins their session with a 20-30 minute talk and slide presentation covering a broad overview of astronomy and recent news. At the end of the talk (if the sky is clear) they will have telescopes set up outside for park visitors to view whatever astronomical objects are available. No pets allowed. Meet at the Sanderling Nature Center. 8:30 p.m.

Fall Open House. Come to Kohler-Andrae for a fun filled day of events - a fall hike, children's games, and a visit from Smokey Bear. Halloween in the Park. Celebrate Halloween early at Kohler-Andrae. Campers are encouraged to decorate their campsites for this sixth annual event. Guided candlelight hike, pumpkin carving, crafts, star gazing, and entertainment around the campfire. Children may dress in costume. Sorry, pets are not allowed on the hike or in the shelters. Enclosed shelter. 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Halloween. Campers at Kohler-Andrae traditionally decorate their campsites with Halloween displays this weekend. The event typically draws large crowds. Some campground roads may be closed in the evening to allow children to enjoy trick or treat. Campground.
