Capture the spirit of adventure while in the Superior Area [exit DNR] and Douglas County [exit DNR] area. Take in a variety of things to see and do, all within an hour's drive of Amnicon Falls and many costing only the time to stop by.

Big Manitou Falls in springPattison State Park, with the breathtaking beauty of Wisconsin's highest waterfall, 165-foot-high Big Manitou Falls The park is on Highway 35 south of Superior, about 18 miles from Amnicon Falls. Nature trails, swimming beach, and camping add to the park's attraction. Your state park sticker admits you to both Amnicon Falls and Pattison State Parks.

Trout fishing on the Brule RiverBrule River State Forest, 15 minutes east of Amnicon Falls State Park, boasts the Bois Brule River, known nationwide for its fine trout fishing and canoeing Spend the day paddling down the river or hiking the many trails, some of which convert to ski trails in winter. The fish hatchery in the village of Brule is another interesting stop. Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds where the hatchery produces 700,000 brook, brown, and rainbow trout each year for stocking in Wisconsin streams.

Northwest from the park via US Highway 2/53, Wisconsin Point beckons on the Lake Superior shore at Moccasin Mike Road. Anyone who hasn't spent a day on Lake Superior wading, bathing, beachcombing, picnicking, rock hunting, or just sitting around to soak in the magnitude and splendor of this magnificent body, of water ought to do so at least once. The entry lighthouse [exit DNR], the Native American burial ground [exit DNR], and the natural beauty of the beach are included in this rewarding experience.

The City of Superior is also is northwest of the park. Immerse yourself in local history by touring: the SS Meteor [exit DNR], the last remaining whaleback freighter and a forerunner of today's 1,000-foot Great Lakes ships; the Old Fire House and Police Museum, a turn-of-the-century fire station with a collection of vintage fire engines, vehicles, equipment and memorabilia; and Fairlawn Mansion [exit DNR], a 42-room Victorian mansion built by lumber baron Martin Pattison, who provided the land for Pattison State Park. History in the making is in the city's international port and found on the Vista Fleet harbor cruises, or catch the "big ones" while enjoying a Lake Superior fishing charter, both available for boarding at Barker's Island. Enjoy a stroll through the island's marina.
