Brunet Island State Park ConditionsConditions as of Monday, October 6, 2008: Fall colors are at 50 percent in the area. The ash trees are dropping their leaves quickly, the maples are turning, and the sumac are in full red color. TrailsPark trails are in good condition. NatureSpecies of birds we have been seeing or hearing include ravens [exit DNR], loons, robins, a variety of wrens, phoebes [exit DNR], piliated woodpeckers, great horned [exit DNR] and barred owls,and bald eagles. Wintergreen [exit DNR], common mullein [exit DNR], white snakeroot [exit DNR], the water lilies, some aster varieties, anda few cardinal flowers [exit DNR] are flowering. FishingThe open water game fish action has been good this past week. Bass action on spinner baits and float baits has been productive, walleye action has been spotty. There has been good musky action on Cornell flowage and below the Cornell dam. Panfish action has been increasing in the bays as the water temperature is dropping. CampingThe south campground is open with electric sites, hand water pump and shower facility available. The south campground road paving project has been completed. The north campground is open, with pit toilets and hand water pump available. The picnic area flush toilet building and the camper dump station are open for the summer season. Please register at the park office between 9 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. before setting up. As the park office is not regularly staffed at this time of year, please use one of the yellow self registration pay posts which are at the office and in each campground.
