Whitefish Dunes State Park Conditions

Conditions as of Tuesday, August 12, 2008:

Take time to explore and enjoy Whitefish Dunes State Park!

Trails

For those who are looking to view the dunes, a hike on the red trail (2.8 miles) is strongly suggested. It begins behind the nature center and travels through the forested dunes to the tallest dune in Wisconsin, Old Baldy. Steps allow visitors to climb up the fragile dune to the top (93 feet). The overlook provides a tree top view of Lake Michigan, Clark Lake and the surrounding countryside.

For hikers interested in longer trail, park staff recommend the yellow trail (4.2 miles). This trail begins in the forested dunes, transverses through the conifer forest, pine plantation, open reindeer meadow and back through the rolling forested dunes.

Dog are welcome but must remain on a leash 8 feet or less. The dog beach can be accessed by hiking the red trail .75 miles to the third access. Dog owners are reminded to be responsible pet owners and pick up after their pets.

Those looking to bike are reminded that wide tires are strongly suggested due to the sandy nature of the trail. The trail is less than 2 miles long but connects to South Cave Point Drive, County Road WD and Schauer Road. There is no loop bike trail in the park.

Beach

The beach goers can enjoy an easy hike along the grid system to the beach. The Big Red Tent is open Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. The tent features a different theme each day, programs begin on the hour and involve a craft and educational activity. Discover nature, check out a beach toy and learn something new. The tent will be canceled for rain or lightening.

Upcoming Special Events
Saturday, August 16, 7th Annual Candlelight Beach Walk

Rent the Shelter

We are taking reservations now for 2008 events in our beautiful cedar shelter building. It is an enclosed building with lights and electricity. It has a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan. Many park visitors are using the shelter for (small) wedding receptions, family reunions and other gatherings.

Vehicle Admission Stickers

When the park office is closed, visitors can use the self-registration station to buy admission stickers.

There is no camping at Whitefish Dunes State Park.
