Whitefish Dunes State Park
Tying Naturally--Making Nettle Cordage

Rope, or cordage, was used in many different ways by native peoples. In this hands-on activity, students will learn to identify native plants that can be used to make cordage, and they will experience the challenges of making rope by hand. Students will identify ways that cordage was discovered and used in everyday life.

Special Instructions

The program is entirely an outdoor program. Dress in layers due to park being at least 10-15 degrees cooler than inland temperatures. Windbreakers are also a suggestion. This program can be combined with People of the Dunes.
