Snakes. Our Friends … Really!

You can't shake hands with a snake, but if snakes make your hands shake, this program is for you! Fear of snakes is a learned behavior! This program will dispel rumors about snakes and leave participants with an appreciation of the ten species of snakes that inhabit the Devil's Lake area. A hands-on experience awaits willing individuals!

This program addresses the following academic standards:

Science

  • F.8.6 Understand how organisms are regulated
  • F.8.7 Understand that behavior evolves through adaptation
  • F.8.8 Investigate interdependence in populations & ecosystems

Special instructions

A common garter snake will be available for people to touch or hold if they desire. Students should be advised in advance by their teachers that no one will be required to touch or hold a snake. Students should also be told not to pressure each other to do so.
