Buckhorn State Park Conditions

Conditions as of Monday, February 6, 2012:

Trails

Ski trails have very little snow left.

Camping

Campsites 8, 9 and 16 are open as non-reservable, first-come, first-served campsites. All other campsites are closed for camping. Drinking water is available at the park office spigot by the rest room. You can reserve sites for dates up to 11 months in advance.

We are looking for camp hosts for June and July 2012. Call (608) 565-2789 if interested.

Firewood Notice: Due to the potential of carrying harmful tree pests and diseases, firewood from out of state or from more than 25 miles away is not allowed on Wisconsin State Park or Forest properties. Also, firewood that has been in the Wisconsin emerald ash borer quarantined area [PDF 102KB] is not allowed on properties outside of the quarantined area. Please buy firewood at or near the park or forest where you are going. Call the DNR toll-free Firewood Hotline, (877) 303-WOOD ((877) 303-9663) for information before packing for a trip. Firewood is available at the park office.

Accessible Cabin

We are currently taking applications for the accessible cabin [PDF]. The cabin is available from May 1 through October 15.

Fishing

People have been out ice fishing on the lake. Remember, park staff do not monitor ice conditions. Maybe you will see a bald eagle by the lake!

The drawdown has started on the lake and will continue through early March.

Hunting

Small game, waterfowl and trapping are allowed in the Yellow River Wildlife Area and Buckhorn Wildlife Area. For more information and hunting maps, please see: Hunting Information and Maps at Buckhorn State Park.

Applications are available for the 2012 Novice Learn to Deer Hunt program.

More Information

Check out the ecobox on the barrens trail. GPS units are available to check out as well as a binder listing the geocaches found at Buckhorn and Roche-A-Cri state parks. The Friends of Buckhorn is always looking for new members and meets the first Tuesday of each month.

Park stickers are required in all areas of the park, including lot D and launches C and D. Please use the self-registration boxes at the boat launches or stop at the park office.

Vehicle admission stickers for 2012 are available for sale. If the office is closed, self-register for an annual sticker and it will be mailed to you.
