Wyalusing State Park Conditions

Conditions as of Wednesday, February 8, 2012:

Trails

Cross-country ski trails were groomed on Tuesday, February 7. Whitetail Meadows Trail was tracked and is still almost all snow-covered. The south loop of Turkey Hollow and roadway to Henneger Point is also tracked. Warmer than normal temperatures for this time of year are responsible for “less than ideal” ski conditions.

All hiking trails are still snow covered.  Please remember, no pets or walking on the ski trails.

Camping

The Wisconsin Ridge campground is open for camping on a first-come, first-served basis. Homestead campground, the Outdoor Group campground and the Indoor Group campground are closed for the season. The road to the outdoor group campground is not plowed during the winter.

The shower/flush toilet building is closed for the season. All fountains throughout the park are shut down for the season with the exception of the winterized faucet. The dumping station is closed, but campers can fill their tanks, using their own hose at the winterized faucet located just east of the shower flush building in the Wisconsin Ridge campground. Campers can use the dumping station to dump. The water at the dumping station has been shut off.

To reserve regular or outdoor group sites for dates May through October, use the Web or call (888) 947-2757, TTY (800) 274-7275.

Fees for using the Indoor Group Camp have changed. Fees are now $6 per person per night and $300 minimum per night.

Firewood Notice: Due to the potential of carrying harmful tree pests and diseases, firewood from out of state or from more than 25 miles away is not allowed on Wisconsin State Park or Forest properties. Also, firewood that has been in the Wisconsin emerald ash borer quarantined area [PDF 102KB] is not allowed on properties outside of the quarantined area. Please buy firewood at or near the park or forest where you are going. Call the DNR toll-free Firewood Hotline, (877) 303-WOOD ((877) 303-9663) for information before packing for a trip. Even though parts of Vernon and Crawford counties are within the 50 mile radius, firewood from these two counties is not allowed in the park. Firewood may not be transported out of a quarantined area. This includes firewood purchased or originating from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin (Crawford County).

Concessions

The concession stand is closed for the season. There are a number of firewood vendors located within one mile of the park entrance.

Nature

The office bird feeders are a flurry of activity with the recent cold, wind and snow. Raccoons have ceased to be a problem because of the colder temperatures. A sharp-shinned hawk has also found the feeders, making it a “bird feeder” in the every sense of the word. It is amazing to see the birds scatter when the sharp-shinned makes its sudden appearance.

The landscape is certainly beautiful with the snow and the bright red of the many cardinals. Bird sightings in the park include bluejays, juncos, cardinals, goldfinches, mourning doves, red-bellied woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, tufted titmice, tree sparrows, purple finches, wild turkeys, various hawks, and bald eagles.

Events

See the DNR Events Calendar for a list of events at Wyalusing and other state parks. Astronomy programs are done for the year and will resume in spring 2012.

Park Admission Stickers

Each vehicle parking in the park must have a vehicle admission sticker. If the office is not staffed, use the self-registration tube just past the drive-up window at the park office. State Park Stickers for 2012 are available and are valid through December 31, 2012.

More Information

The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

In addition to state park stickers, a variety of Friends of Wyalusing merchandise, including T shirts, sweatshirts, caps, and books are available and would make a great gifts.
