New Glarus Woods State Park
Current Conditions
Conditions as of Monday, February 6, 2012:
Trails
All hiking and interpretive trails are open for use. Some trails surfaces are exposed, but mostly contain a mix of snow, slush and mud, especially on warmer, sunny days. Pets are permitted on the trails provided they are on a leash 8 feet or shorter, and the owners pick up after them.
Trails are not groomed when there is snow, but they are perfect for snowshoeing, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
Nature
Tree and ground squirrels are very active during these warmer winter days. Deer are on the move but difficult to spot on the mostly brown landscape. Tracking is easy this time of year. Some migratory birds are still in the area due to the unseasonably warm temperatures. Bluebirds, robins and even yellow-rumped warblers have been spotted in the area. Resident woodpeckers, chickadees and juncos are moving about the forests as usual. Distant hoots of the barred and great horned owls can be heard as they venture through the mating and nesting season. Reptiles and amphibians are tucked away for hibernation during this winter season, but the occasional spider or insect is out during the warmer days. Some tree buds are beginning to swell with the warmer temperatures.
Camping
The campground is closed for the winter.
You can reserve a site for 2012 by calling (888) 947-2757 or online.
Firewood Notice: Due to the potential of carrying harmful tree pests and diseases, firewood from out of state or from more than 25 miles away is not allowed on Wisconsin State Park or Forest properties. Also, firewood that has been in the Wisconsin emerald ash borer quarantined area [PDF 102KB] is not allowed on properties outside of the quarantined area. Please buy firewood at or near the park or forest where you are going. Call the DNR toll-free Firewood Hotline, (877) 303-WOOD ((877) 303-9663) for information before packing for a trip.
Firewood is available for sale from park staff and friends group members, from vendors outside the park, and in the Village of New Glarus.
Picnicking
Picnic tables and grills are available for use even in the winter, as is the playground in our picnic area. One open picnic shelter is available for first-come, first-served use. The shelter does have electricity and lights. To reserve the shelter for an event please contact the park manager (608) 527-2335.
More Information
All vehicles entering the park must have a state
park admission sticker, which can be purchased at the park office, online, or at self-registration stations. The 2012 admission stickers are good through December 31, 2012 and can be used
at all state parks, forests and recreation areas.
