The goal of the Butler's Gartersnake Conservation Strategy is to secure the long-term conservation of the Butler's Gartersnake in Wisconsin in a manner that takes into account the economic needs of the metropolitan Milwaukee area. The Conservation Strategy was developed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in partnership with a team of specialists with expertise in Butler's gartersnake biology, landscape ecology and ecological planning and with stakeholders from the Milwaukee area.

The strategy provides criteria for the evaluation of a site's conservation value based on the size and quality of the entire suitable habitat patch, including that portion of the patch that is not included within the project site (see definitions). Each site is classified within a 3-tiered system, with protection measures identified for each tier.

The Department will continue to incorporate the most current science into the strategy. As such, the strategy is fluid and may change over time.
