Ecosystem Management Decision Making Process

Addressing Biodiversity Through Ecosystem Management

Ecosystem management is an approach that blends human needs and values with ecosystem capability and sustainability. It is based on the premise that natural resources should be managed as natural systems, and that humans are an integral part of these systems.

To successfully practice ecosystem management, managers must have useful and reliable information. This is where Natural Heritage Inventory (NHI) Data comes into play. NHI data on the status and distribution of species and natural communities is a critical component for helping managers ensure sustainability and provide desired ecological conditions, economic products, and social benefits.

The Ecosystem Management Approach
Management goals should be set and action taken using an approach that integrates staff and resources across program lines and disciplines. Biological Diversity should be considered within the entire range of issues that DNR mangers must consider when they carry out the Department mission.

  • Incorporate transdisciplinary perspective
  • Manage at landscape scale
  • Manage to preserve ecological composition, structure and function
  • Find ways to take action without knowing all the answers
