Lakes of the Upper Chippewa Basin
The Upper Chippewa Basin has an abundance of lakes. Over 2400 individual lakes are documented in DNR data systems within the Upper Chippewa GMU; these lakes range in size from 0.5 acres to the Lake Chippewa Lake at 14135 acres. Nine (9) lakes are designated Exceptional Resource Waters and 22 lakes are designated as Outstanding Resource Waters. Fifty-two (52) lakes are listed as impaired waters with most of these listed for fish consumption advisories for mercury. Overall, however, region's lakes are are the area's highlights providing endless enjoyment for permanent and part-time residents and the areas many visitors each year.
