Need Help Planning?
Planning Grants
The Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) administers a comprehensive planning grant program. The program provides funding for the development of local comprehensive plans. Towns, villages, cities, counties, regional planning commissions, and tribes are eligible to apply for grants. For more information visit the DOA's comprehensive planning grants program [Exit DNR] web site.

DNR Grants & Financial Assistance
The DNR does not administer grant or financial assistance programs to fund comprehensive planning. The agency does, however, administer a number of programs that can support parts of the planning process and implementation of community comprehensive plans. The Bureau of Community Financial Assistance administers DNR grant and loan programs. Financial assistance program staff work closely with local governments and interested groups to develop and support projects that protect public health and the environment, and provide recreational opportunities.
- GrantsA variety of grants are available for acquisition of land and easements for conservation and outdoor recreation purposes, dam rehabilitation/abandonment, dry cleaner remediation, forest fire protection, urban forestry, gypsy moth control, household hazardous waste collection, hunter education, lake protection and management, municipal flood control, nonpoint source runoff pollution, parks, recreational facilities and trails, recycling, habitat restoration, river protection and management, small and abandoned dam removal, urban wildlife damage, and well compensation
- LoansLoans are available for drinking water, wastewater, and brownfields projects through the Environmental Improvement Fund (EIF), an umbrella fund for the Clean Water Fund, Safe Drinking Water Loan, and Land Recycling Loan programs.
Other State Financial Assistance Programs
Other related grant and loan programs exist within other state agencies. The Department of Administration's web site includes the Wisconsin Catalog of Community Assistance, which provides a comprehensive list and description of all State of Wisconsin grant and loan programs.
