New Requirement: All WI Recreational Safety Students are required to obtain a WI DNR Customer ID Number before the completion of any Recreational Safety Class and will also be required to provide that WI DNR Customer ID Number along with students personal information to the instructor.  You can obtain a WI DNR Customer ID Number 7AM to 10PM by calling the WI DNR Customer Service at 1-888-936-7463 or you can visit a WI DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled hours.  For WI DNR Service Center hours and locations go to dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/cs/ServiceCenter..  Thank you.

Upcoming Classes

The number of recreational boaters using Wisconsin's waterways has grown tremendously over the past decade. As our waterways become more crowded and the types of boats using the water becomeWisconsin Boaters more varied, it is increasingly important for boaters to become educated on safe boating techniques and laws. Boating safety course graduates can help ensure healthy, happy, and safe voyages for years to come.

Course Objective

To reduce the potential for boat accidents, injuries and fatalities; to reduce the potential for conflict between different types of boating activities and other resource users; and to promote safe, responsible, and ethical use of the environment and our resources.

Course Content

  1. All about boats, classification of boats, hull designs, and motors.
  2. Legal requirements including registration and equipment requirements.
  3. Navigation rules, basic safety regulations, and waterway marking systems.
  4. Getting underway, preparation, loading, boarding, cruising, docking, anchoring, knots, trailering, courtesy, and maintenance.
  5. Boat accidents, emergency measures, aquatic safety, alcohol usage, visual distress signals, fire on board, and first aid.

Course Information

The classroom boating safety course consists of a basic eight hours of classroom instruction in the principles of boating safety. Go to our upcoming classes page to view the latest classes being offered.

Who is Eligible/Required to Take a Class

Wisconsin boating safety certification or out of state equivalent certification is required for operators born on or after January 1, 1989 and at least 16 years of age. Operators 12 to 15 years of age must either have a certificate or have an adult on board while operating. Anyone is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education completion certificate. For children under 12 years of age, the certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age. (read the boating regulations for full details)
