Land Acquisition Program

Funding: $45 million each year

Purpose: Acquire land and easements for natural areas, habitat areas and fisheries, streambank protection, state parks, state trails, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, the North Country National Scenic Trail, state forests, state recreation areas, wildlife areas, the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, wild lakes, flowages, and lands for preservation of endangered and threatened species.

Acquisition Priorities:

  • Natural areas
  • Streambank protection
  • Habitat areas and fisheries
  • Middle Kettle Moraine
  • Lands that preserve or enhance the state's water resources, including the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, wild lakes, designated wild rivers and land along the shores of the Great Lakes

DNR Projects: The Land Acquisition Program is the backbone of Wisconsin’s public lands program; it funds all major DNR land conservation projects from the Willow Flowage to the Great Addition. It also provides funding for less prominent, yet critical, acquisitions within the boundaries of existing state projects, such as Devil’s Lake State Park.

NCO Projects: The Land Acquisition Program is also the source of funding for grants to Nonprofit Conservation Organization (NCO) projects under the following subprograms:
