Funded at $45 million each year, this subprogram provides funds to the DNR and NCOs to acquire land for natural areas, habitat areas, fisheries, streambank protection, state parks, state trails including the Ice Age and North Country National Scenic Trails, state forests, recreation areas, wildlife areas, state riverways, and preservation of endangered and threatened species. |
$7 million dollars is allocated to the DNR each year to develop recreational facilities on state lands.
$250,000 of this amount is set aside for grants to Friends groups and NCOs to develop amenities and restore habitat on state lands, lands dedicated as State Natural Areas, and lands dedicated for the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Up to $8 million is allocated to Local Assistance grants. Local governments and NCOs can apply for funds to acquire and develop land for local parks; acquire and enhance land along urban rivers; acquire land for urban green space; and acquire development rights to enhance nature-based outdoor recreation. |
A total of $5 million dollars (set aside in year 2000) is available to the DNR, NCOs, and local governments to acquire land and easements within the boundaries of the Baraboo Range National Natural Landmark. |
