Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act

(16 U.S.C. 777-777k, 64 Stat. 430)

Revenue for this grant program comes from Federal excise taxes on fishing equipment and a portion of the federal gas tax. These funds are apportioned each year to the states by the Department of the Interior on the basis of a formula set forth in the Act. The Act specifically requires that at least 15 percent of each state's apportionment be used for motorboat access activities. The DNR uses the balance of their Sport Fish Restoration (SFR) funds for other fish management projects such as land acquisition, habitat restoration and development, aquatic education, public fishing piers and shorefishing, fish propagation and stocking, and research.

The DNR may negotiate contracts and financial assistance agreements with local units of government to renovate or construct boat access sites and construct fishing piers and shorefishing opportunities. Interested local units of government that have potential projects should contact their Regional DNR Community Services Specialist.
