Land and Water Conservation FundWelcome to the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Program. Think about the natural beauty of Wisconsin, the positive connection between our landscapes, quality of life, and healthy local economies, and the importance of maintaining good health through the experience of outdoor fun. The LWCF program recognizes the importance of creating and protecting these relationships for the benefit of Wisconsin citizens and future generations. In Wisconsin the LWCF program plays an important role in our state’s integrated approach to conservation and recreation along side other partnerships and financial assistance programs such as the state’s Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program. Congress established the LWCF program in 1965 to create parks and open spaces, protect wilderness, wetlands, and refuges, preserve wildlife habitat, and enhance recreational opportunities. From parks to playgrounds, wilderness to wetlands, bicycle paths to hiking trails, LWCF has helped communities nationwide acquire nearly seven million acres of parkland, water resources, and open space. Nationally, LWCF has underwritten the development of more than 37,000 state and local park and recreation projects. In Wisconsin, we have funded over 1800 state and local government land acquisition and development projects with the over $70 million received since the program's beginnings.
