The Economics of Climate Change: Findings from the Stern Review

The Department of Natural Resources along with our partners Michael Best and Friedrich, LLP and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, UW-Madison are very pleased to present the web cast of the February 23rd, 2007 presentation of The Economics of Climate Change, Findings from the Stern Review [exit DNR] that took place in the US Bank Building in Madison, WI. The review authored by the former head economist of the World Bank outlines the economical impacts that can be expected given the current course of climate change.

We have heard how climate change will effect the environment, but how will it affect our economy? Ms. Lorraine Hamid, Senior Economist, for Energy Markets and Policy Instruments, Her Majesty’s Treasury, has worked on the “Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change” since its commission by the United Kingdom. The following link allows you to see the presentation where Ms. Hamid presented the findings from the Stern Review, authored by the former head economist of the World Bank, Sir Nicholas Stern. Highlights include:

  • Current trends and average temperatures
  • Connecting the economy to ecology
  • Scenarios if emissions continue to grow
  • Total cost to the global economy
  • How tackling climate change can be a pro-growth strategy
  • Cost of action now versus in the future
  • What a stabilized carbon power sector looks like
  • Potential for future markets for low-carbon energy products
