Dry Cleaning Partnership

Wisconsin is creating a tidal wave of enthusiasm for cleaner technologies and operations in the fabric care industry. Here are two programs co-sponsored by the DNR and industry partners that are making a difference.

Wisconsin's Five Star Environmental Recognition Program for Drycleaners

The primary focus of the Five Star program is to encourage reductions in the use and emissions of perchloroethylene (perc), a common but potentially hazardous drycleaning solvent. Participating cleaners pursue recycling opportunities, spill prevention strategies, more efficient solvent use, and more wet cleaning to reduce their perc consumption. Cleaners with a Five Star rating, the highest in the program, have achieved at least 25% wet cleaning.

Citizens for a Better Environment (CBE) has partnered with the Department of Natural Resources to promote consumer awareness of environmentally preferable products and services. CBE's "A Greener Choice for Clean Clothes" program spotlights cleaners with Four and Five Star ratings.

All cleaners are welcome to enter the program at any level. Membership in the Five Star program and a commitment to reducing solvent use can help boost sales to conscientious consumers.

Dry Cleaning Environmental Response Program

The fabric care industry designed this program to reimburse cleaners for a portion of their costs associated with responding to, investigating and remediating dry cleaning solvent contamination. The program is funded by dry cleaners license fees and fees paid by dry cleaning solvent distributors. The Department of Revenue collects the fees, and the Department of Natural Resources administers the program. Learn more...
