Large White Trillium

[Large White Trillium]

The trillium gets its name from the Latin word for three. It has three large petals and three broad leaves. Trilliums are a favorite wildflower for many people. They can be seen in the early spring covering the woodland floor with white and pink blossoms. Trilliums can be found from Ontario, Quebec, western Maine, south to Georgia, west to Arkansas and to northern Minnesota. They bloom just about the time that robins appear and some people call them "wake robins." Look for a stalk 8-10 inches tall with three large oval-shaped leaves just below the three ruffled white petals at the top. Trilliums were used by Native Americans for food and as a drug to help the sick.
