Prairie Dock

[prairie dock]

Don t mistake this plant for either the sunflower or the compass plant. It is a yellow flower that stands 2-10 feet tall in wet prairies in Wisconsin and central plains states, as well as Florida and Alabama. This plant has one main stem with several branching stems at the center and top of the plant. Look for the large heart-shaped leaves at the base that are rough and have a toothed edge. This prairie beauty also blooms from July to September. It is part of the "rosinweed" family along with the compass plant.
