Spring Wildflower Walk

Bloodroot

Any guesses how this plant got its name? If you looked at the root system of this plant, it would look blood red, containing a bright red-orange juice. Native Americans used the root as a dye for baskets, bodies, and clothing. Look for a single white flower coming up with a single folded leaf. When the leaf first appears it is wrapped around the flower bud. The delicate white flower appears in March/April.
