Purple Finch

Female Purple Finch Male Purple Finch

A famous bird expert once described the male purple finch as "a sparrow dipped in raspberry juice." The female doesn't have the red coloring. You can tell it and a streaked sparrow apart by its large, stout bill. Purple finches live throughout Wisconsin in winter, and in northern Wisconsin in summer.

Purple finches like to eat thistle seed, millet, and sunflower seeds at the feeder.
