"Who's missing a bobber down there?"

This is a Northern Pike

By Ryan

This summer was really eventful for me. I moved to Wisconsin from Sioux City, Iowa, participated in the Iowa State Championship Spelling Bee and caught my first northern pike. My cousin, Joel, usually spends a couple weeks every summer with our family. My Brother, Bo, had caught his first northern a couple weeks ago. Dad got us all up early in the morning to go fishing. He took us to one of his favorite places, where his dad used to take him. We were fishing with chubs & bobbers. As a 9 year old I have a lot of patience. I bet that I could concentrate on fishing for 5 minutes without getting bored. Joel and I were catching these giant snails in the weeds. I heard my dad yell "Who's missing a bobber down there?" I looked at mine, looked again, it was gone. I jumped up and ran to my rod. It's a good thing that dad taught us to push the button on our reels so the line goes out, or I wouldn't have a rod anymore. Dad told me to turn the handle, and when I feel the fish pull on the rod, I have to pull back as hard as I can. I pulled and could barely hold on. Dad kept saying "Keep your rod tip up." I fought the fish long and hard. I was really getting tired when he got to the bank. Bo went down the steep bank and grabbed him by the gills and flipped him up by me (even though the net was at my feet). It was my first northern pike. Dad measured him at 27" long. I was no longer tired. Dad actually let me keep this one to eat. He took a picture of me with it which I have in my scrap book. I am looking forward to catching many more fish this next summer.
