Annual Recycling and Landfill Reports
Since the inception of the Recycling Law, the DNR has used annual reports from local governments, or responsible units, and landfill operators to monitor Wisconsin's recycling program.
Annual Reports from Responsible Units
Local units of government (responsible units) that have recycling responsibilities must submit an annual report to the DNR that includes the amount of recyclables collected from one to four family residences. They are required to report on materials banned from landfills, but some also report on additional items.
Annual Reports from Landfill Operators
Landfill operators must submit an annual report to the DNR that includes categories of waste received from Wisconsin and out-of state. Municipal solid waste (MSW), reported as Category 1 waste, is the waste generated by residences and commercial establishments. All other waste is considered non-municipal solid waste (categories 2 through 23) and are the wastes generated primarily by industries. Get more information on landfilled waste from both Wisconsin and other states on our waste imports and exports page.
