Objectives and Strategies for Goal 3

Goal 1: By 2015, increase waste material reuse and recycling and maximize the environmental and economic benefits for Wisconsin of waste as raw materials by 30%.

The Waste and Materials Management Program has set the following objectives that together enable us to achieve Goal 3:

  • Objective 3.1: By December 2007, develop and implement long term vision of waste materials management, recycling and solid waste disposal for Wisconsin. Our strategies include: training staff so they can communicate the vision of Moving Towards Zero Waste to the public and recognizing communities that adopt a policy on sustainability or zero waste.
  • Objective 3.2: By 2010, we will have established two partnerships to improve material recycling and reuse and one legislative effort to promote producer responsibility. Our strategies include establishing partnerships to improve recycling and reuse of construction and demolition and organic materials and seeking legislative support for electronics recycling.
  • Objective 3.3: Increase efficiency of Wisconsin's recycling program. Our strategies include developing a budget proposal related to increasing business recycling; streamlining the residential recycling rules; developing business recycling best practices; and evaluating and improving local government compliance with existing recycling program criteria.
  • Objective 3.4: Increase beneficial use. Our strategies include sharing information on low hazard exemptions and use of industrial by-products and increasing our outreach to industry.
