Local Water Quality Management Planning Aids

(s. 604(b), Federal Clean Water Act, s. 281.51, Wis. Stats., and ch. NR 121, Wis. Adm. Code)

Local, county, and regional planning agencies, commissions and departments and other local government units and tribes with water quality management planning responsibilities can receive funding to assist with the development and implementation of area-wide water quality management planning activities.

Eligible projects include:

  • Sewer service area plans and amendments.
  • Local and regional water resource management and watershed planning activities.
  • Regional wastewater facility planning initiatives.
  • Identification and protection of water quality sensitive environmental corridors.

The eligible cost of water quality planning may be funded at 100 percent. Depending upon proposed water quality priorities, work plans, cost estimates, and fund source, matching local funds may be required.

DNR negotiates annual contracts with planning agencies and commissions. Project proposals may be submitted through regional DNR watershed management planning staff on a continuous basis. The DNR, in cooperation with regional planning agencies, sets annual priorities to assist with areawide water quality management planning activities. Proposals must be received by November 30 to be considered for funding in the next calendar year.
