KEWAUNEE, Wis. - Pagel's Ponderosa LLC is planning an expansion project for its large dairy farm. Pagel's engineering consultant, Wisconsin Property Services, submitted plans for the expansion on April 11, 2013 to the Department of Natural Resources.
The expansion includes building a new dry cow free stall barn at N4893 County Road C, Kewaunee, Wis. DNR staff will review the plans for the manure transfer line for the proposed barn as part of Pagel's Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit requirements. Pagel's dairy currently has 4,648 milking cows and after the expansion project is completed would have 5,800 milking cows and 430 large heifers housed onsite. Pagel's will have more than the required 180 days of manure storage and adequate acreage in its nutrient management plan to support the additional waste generation.
DNR staff reviewed increased water usage and possible impact to wetlands through the permitting and approval processes for the expansion. Based on review of project information, the nutrient management plan, and WPDES permit conditions, the department has determined that no adverse environmental impacts are anticipated from this project and an environmental assessment is not required.
