Bikers and hikers are invited to participate with local and state officials in the grand opening of the Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit's Lake to Lake Bike Trail on Saturday, May 9, and ride or hike on the new, 6.5 mile limestone surface bike trail. A dedication ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Mauthe Lake Recreation Area. The bike trail was completed in the fall of 2008 and extends from the Mauthe Lake Recreation Area through the Village of Dundee to the Long Lake Recreation Area.
The Friends of the Kettle Moraine, the Long Lake Preservation Association, and the Dundee Long Lake Lions Club are sponsoring a Lake to Lake 10K Trail Run/Hike at 10:00 a.m. Trail runners and walkers will travel by bus from Mauthe Lake to the starting line at the Long Lake Recreation Area. At the finish in the Mauthe Lake Recreation Area, contestants will be served complimentary refreshments and light snacks and the Dundee Long Lake Lions Club will sell sandwiches and refreshments to the public. Proceeds from the race will support local service projects of the three non-profit groups.
In celebration of the grand opening, May 9 has been designated as an Open House Day for the forest. All vehicle admission and trail pass fees will be waived for forest visitors.
