HORICON, Wis. - On Saturday, June 30, from 8 a.m. to Noon, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' wildlife staff will be educating participants about wildlife and the marsh as they paddle the water trail through Horicon Marsh into the Rock River.

The canoe/kayak trail starts at the Greenhead Boat Landing in Mayville and continues through the marsh to the city of Horicon. There will be interpreters from the Wisconsin DNR staff posted at various stopping places along the marked canoe/kayak trail in the marsh. They will briefly cover topics such as the history of Horicon Marsh (old hunting artifacts will be shown), management of the marsh, the four mile island heron rookery, marsh wildlife and be available for any other questions. The wildlife biologist will also be along the route in an airboat (conditions permitting) to show people one of the many management tools used on Horicon Marsh. This is a great opportunity to talk with experts and learn from some of the people that work at the marsh every day. Another management tool, the Marsh Master, will be parked at the Nebraska Street boat landing for people to view. This is where participants will exit the waterway.

Paddlers may bring their own canoes or kayaks and a free shuttle provided by Johnson Bus will be available at the Nebraska Street Boat Landing in Horicon from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to take drivers back to their vehicles at Greenhead. If you would like to participate but don't have your own vessel, you can rent one at Horicon Marsh Boat Tours in Horicon. Horicon Marsh Boat Tours will be running its own shuttles that day to the launch site at Greenhead for an additional fee. For boat rental, canoe/kayak trail maps or other information on paddling the Horicon Marsh, contact (920) 387-7893 or go to www.horiconmarsh.org. GPS coordinates for Greenhead boat landing are N43 30 19.5 W088 35 31.3 and physical address is N8600 Green Head Road, Horicon, WI 53032.
