CWD-Management Zone: Gun deer season registration/sampling stations

FITCHBURG – Carcass registration and sample collection stations are now set for the gun deer season beginning Nov. 21 in the chronic wasting disease-Management Zone (CWD-MZ) of southern and southeast Wisconsin.

The traditional season opens the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving and runs through Sunday, Nov. 29.

Most of the Department of Natural Resources’ South Central Region and a good part of the agency’s Southeast Region lie within the CWD-MZ. Hunters are advised to check the 2009 Wisconsin Deer Hunting Regulations booklet for more detailed information.

Earn-A-Buck in the CWD-MZ

Hunters in the CWD-MZ must first shoot an antlerless deer in order to “earn” a sticker allowing them to harvest an antlered deer. Hunters could have prequalified for the buck harvest sticker by having shot an antlerless deer from an Earn-A-Buck or CWD unit last year, or by having registered an antlerless deer in either this year’s archery season or four-day October antlerless deer hunt. Hunters who shot an antlerless deer during a season from one of the aforementioned units this year should have received a buck sticker when they registered their antlerless deer.

Registration

All deer killed in the CWD-MZ must be registered no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day after it was harvested within the unit of kill or adjacent unit of kill within the CWD-MZ.

In addition to the sampling and registration stations in the CWD-MZ, hunters can drop-off their deer carcass for donation to the food pantry program at 4 locations in southern Wisconsin. Hunters must first register their deer before they can bring the carcass to one of the following locations:
