MILWAUKEE - The Onion River Wastewater Commission, serving the communities of Adell and Hingham in Sheboygan County, has requested Department of Natural Resources approval for improvements to its wastewater treatment plant.

The proposed work includes:

  • Expanding the waste receiving station
  • Upgrading the existing fine screens
  • Installing a screenings compactor
  • Overhauling raw sewage pumps and adding new raw sewage piping
  • Modifying the aerators in the oxidation ditch
  • Constructing a secondary clarifier
  • Replacing the ultraviolet disinfection system
  • Converting the aerobic digester to a sludge storage tank
  • Improving the odor control system

The capital cost of the project is estimated at $ 2.9 million. The commission anticipates financing the project through the Clean Water Fund low-interest loan program.

The two communities set user charges independently. It is projected that user charges in the Hingham Sanitary District will increase from the current charge of $22 per month to $51 per month as a result of this project. The Village of Adell currently charges $10.83 per 1,000 gallons of water used plus an $8 meter fee. The charges to Adell customers are expected to increase to $19.50 per 1,000 gallons of water used plus the $8 meter fee. For a household using 3,300 gallons per month, this would equate to a monthly fee of $72.

Although the proposed project is not expected to involve significant environmental impacts, the public is invited to comment. Provide comments by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday,November 3, 2009, to Gerry Novotny, Bureau of Watershed Management, Department of Natural Resources, Box 7921, Madison, Wisconsin 53707, (608) 267-7625.
