GREEN BAY – Marinette County has asked the Department of Natural Resources to approve withdrawal of 39.1 acres of land from the county forest program in order to acquire a 31.85 acre parcel in a land trade with the State of Wisconsin.

The 39.1 acre, county-owned parcel in the Town of Pembine is located to the east of Mullaney Creek Road, 2 miles southeast of Horseshoe Road. This land is to be withdrawn from the county forest program and traded to the State of Wisconsin for a 31.85 acre parcel located to the northeast of Twelve Foot Falls County Park in the Town of Dunbar.

Marinette County and the State are pursuing this land trade to block in areas of county and state ownership to improve management, access, and boundary maintenance.

The proposed DNR action is not expected to result in any significant adverse environmental effects. The department has made a preliminary determination that an environmental impact statement will not be required.

Copies of the environmental assessment that led to the DNR's preliminary determination can be obtained from Joe Schwantes, Marinette County Liaison Forester, 1025 Highway C, Wausaukee, WI 54177. He can be reached by phone at (715) 856-9153 or by email at joseph.schwantes@wisconsin.gov.

Public comments, either written or oral, on the environmental assessment are welcome and must be submitted to Joe Schwantes by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2009.
