Disinfection system needed due to new code regulations

SHAWANO - The Village of Bowler has requested Department of Natural Resources approval to install a new ultraviolet disinfection system at their existing wastewater treatment plant. Their new WPDES permit – a discharge permit - for the village requires disinfection due to new code regulations.

The estimated project cost is $150,500. The Village of Bowler plans to finance this improvement with a low interest Wisconsin Clean Water Fund Loan. The average quarterly user charge for a typical residential customer is expected to increase by $16.87 per quarter bringing the total quarterly user charge to $111.11.

While this type of action normally does not involve significant adverse environmental effects, the department is inviting the public to comment on impacts of the proposal. Based on the comments received, DNR may prepare an environmental analysis before proceeding with approval or denial of the proposal. The analysis would summarize the department's consideration of the impacts of the proposal and reasonable alternatives.

Written or verbal comments are encouraged. Provide comments to Scott Boran, Bureau of Watershed Management, Department of Natural Resources, Box 7921, Madison, Wisconsin 53707, (608) 266-7385 or at Scott.Boran@Wisconsin.gov by June 26, 2009.
