EAU CLAIRE – The state Department of Natural Resources will hold two public open house meetings to initiate a master planning process for the Lower Chippewa River State Wildlife and Natural Area properties.

The purpose of the meetings is to share information about the properties and the upcoming planning process and to gather public comments on the future direction of these properties or on any important issues that should be addressed in the plan.

A meeting will be held May 12 at the Eau Claire DNR Service Center, 1300 W. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire, WI. A second meeting will be held May 19 in the county board room of the Pepin County Government Center, 740 7th Ave. W., Durand. Both will be informal open house meetings. Both will run from 5-8 p.m.

These are the properties covered by the planning process:

  • Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area
  • Tiffany Wildlife Area
  • Dunnville Wildlife Area
  • Big Swamp Wildlife Area
  • Nine Mile Island Natural Area
  • Caryville Savanna Natural Area
  • Rock Falls and Waterville Extensive Wildlife Habitat Areas

Anyone with an interest in these properties is encouraged to attend one of these meetings. There will be informational displays, and DNR staff will be available to discuss the planning process and the properties and to answer your questions.

The properties are all contained within the Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area boundary. When completed, the master plan will describe proposed future management strategies and recreational opportunities. The master plan is intended to guide development and management for the next 15 years or more.

DNR staff has prepared a regional and property analysis. A preliminary statement of vision and goals for the properties has also been developed. One focus of the meetings is to present this information to the public and to accept input to further develop background information.

These documents, along with maps, a public participation plan and other background information will be available at the meeting. They can be viewed online at: Lower Chippewa River Basin.

Those without access to the Internet may pick up copies of the draft regional and property analysis at the Eau Claire service center or a copy can be mailed to you by contacting Bob Michelson.

Also, a copy may be viewed at the Eau Claire DNR service center or at the public libraries in Durand, Menomonie and Eau Claire.

Comments or questions about any of these documents can be offered at the public meetings or can be submitted by mail to Bob Michelson, PO Box 4001, 1300 W. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire, WI 54702-4001; by phone at (715) 839-0046; or by e-mail at Robert.Michelson@Wisconsin.gov.

The DNR will receive comments through May 29, 2009.
