The Brule River State Forest Ecology and Management Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Maple Middle School Cafeteria. Maple is about located 8 miles west of Brule on U.S. Highway 2. People interested in attending should RSVP by phone to (715) 365-8987 before June 5, 1999. At the workshop, Department of Natural Resources staff will examine and discuss ecology and forestry related topics, and participants will help identify the ecological and forest management opportunities and limitations. "We will be sharing information in order to come to a common understanding of ecological and forest management issues," says Ken Brokaw, DNR Brule River State Forest master planning team leader. "This information, along with previous master planning work, will become the basis for developing master planning alternatives for the Brule River State Forest in future workshops." People who are unable to attend, will have an opportunity to review and comment on the results of the meeting by mail. Interested people can get on the mailing list by calling (715) 365-8987. The Brule River State Forest covers more than 40,000 acres of state managed land in eastern Douglas County. Established in 1907 to protect the famous Bois Brule River, the property serves more than 120,000 visitors annually. The current master plan for the forest was completed in 1979 and DNR staff have determined the plan needs to be revised in light of changing ecological, economic and social conditions. Individuals with access to the Internet can find more information on the planning process for the Brule River State Forest on the DNR world wide web site at www.dnr.state.wi.us.
