Black River State Forest

What's New

The Black River State Forest Draft Master Plan was approved on January 27, 2010, by the Natural Resources Board. The final master plan will be published and available at this page in early March.

Master planning for the state forest began in 2006 when the Department drafted a Vision and Goals statement and a Property and Regional Analysis. These were released to the public in January of 2007. A public meeting and comment period followed where concerned citizens and stakeholders provided input on issues important to the future management of the state forest. Additional public meetings and comment periods occurred in 2008 and 2009 during the preferred alternative and draft master plan stages of the process.

Public input combined with state statutes, scientific expertise, management experience, and the property’s limitations and capabilities played a vital role in creating this plan. The master plan meets multiple objectives including the production of forest products, protection of unique natural resource values, boundary expansion opportunities to protect additional resource qualities including the Black River ecosystem, and recreational improvements to meet current and future demands.
