Wisconsin's primary wood-using industry consists of firms that manufacture logs and pulpwood into value-added wood products. Specific examples include sawmills, plywood mills, veneer plants, pulp mills, and firewood processors, as well as companies that manufacture such products as composite panels, log cabins, and treated wood. Currently the Wisconsin Primary Wood Using Industry directory  [exit DNR] lists 494 companies.

The Utilization and Marketing staff help sustain existing business by providing assistance to individual firms on log scaling and grading, grade sawing, edging and trimming for grade, how to conduct a recovery study, how to create a business plan, market development, and resource assessment. Utilization and Marketing staff have assisted mills in competing with international markets. Through connections with technical journals, tours, workshops, and research papers the U&M staff are always searching for new markets and opportunities for Wisconsin companies. Contacts are made and passed on to businesses through talks and written papers.
