25x'25, a group that has been lobbying for energy legislation to provide 25% of the nation's fuel supply from renewables by 2025 argues that agriculture and forestry can help capture carbon in soil, plants and trees, but only if climate change legislation includes a cap and trade program that will adequately reward landowners for doing do.

Forestry Expert Sees Credits for the Trees -Capital Press
For years, Jay O'Laughlin and research associates at the University of Idaho talked about carbon sequestration. To the outside world, it might have seemed like one of those high academic subjects with no application in the "real world." But then "global warming" and "climate change" became part of the everyday vocabulary, and O'Laughlin found himself taking the show on the road.
"Payments for carbon management might sound like 'globaloney' to some, but there's a middle ground, and I'm very glad for that," said the longtime forest resources professor. "We are seeing the greening of our energy and forests have a big role to play."

Buckthorn Biomass to be Converted into Electricity
It was brought to the United States as a hedge and is now more of a nuisance. Buckthorn multiplies so fast it literally chokes native plants and trees, but the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has come up with a powerful pilot plan to make use of the plant.
Earth Day Celebration Planned for Governor’s Residence
The Governor’s Executive Residence will be going green when nearly 1,500 visitors, including more than 450 kids age seven to ten, attend the 2009 Governor’s Earth Day Celebration for Wisconsin’s Children on April 25, 2009. Hosted by Governor Jim Doyle and First Lady Jessica Doyle, this event celebrates agriculture, conservation, and education for Wisconsin’s youth. Pre-registration required. Sign up is available for second through fourth graders.

Going Green? -Beaver Dam Daily Citizen
When environmentalists talk about going green, this isn't what they have in mind. Over the past decade, the emerald ash borer has infiltrated 11 states, including Wisconsin. City of Beaver Dam Parks Supervisor John Neumann says it's only a matter of time before Beaver Dam becomes home to the insect which has already killed 40 million ash trees around the country.
Firewood Processor Turns Up the Heat on Invasives -The Country Today
Chad Zeman, president of Green Thumb Farms, a firewood and mulch business near Prairie du Sac in Sauk County, hosted an on-site portion of a training workshop for heat treatment of firewood. According to Terry Mace, DNR forest utilization and marketing specialist, kiln operations such as Zeman's may be a necessity in the future. Emerald ash borers are in Wisconsin, and the insect is too aggressive to think they won't spread to the whole state.

Wal-Mart Acres for America Grant
Wal-Mart Acres for America, a partnership between Wal-Mart Stores and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, provides funding for projects that conserve important habitat for fish, wildlife, and plants through acquisition of interest in real property. The goal of the Acres for America program is to offset the footprint of Wal-Mart's domestic facilities on at least an acre-by-acre basis through these acquisitions.
Chainsaw Safety Classes
The Kickapoo Woods Cooperative (KWC) and Kickapoo Valley Reserve (KVR) are offering Chainsaw Safety Level I and Level II on April 15 and 16 at the KVR near La Farge, Wisconsin. The KWC regularly offers level 1 chainsaw safety training twice a year, usually in October and April, and you must have taken that class to be eligible to take the more advanced level two training.
Advancing Your Mission Through Urban & Community Forest Councils
The Alliance for Community Trees will be hosting a free webcast on April 16 from 12 noon to 1 :00pm regarding how your organization can benefit from working with Urban & Community Forest Councils. Urban Forest Councils are collaborative organizations comprised of individuals, citizen groups, nonprofits, businesses, and agencies from around a state that share an interest in urban and community forestry. They exist to help communities strengthen the efforts of local groups by serving as a resource, a forum for networking and discussion, and an advocate of the urban forest.

IPM Approach to Lawn & Landscape Care
On April 8-9, 2009, the IPM Institute of North America, Inc. will host the "Natural/IPM Approach to Lawn and Landscape Care" workshop at the Lussier Family Heritage Center in Madison, WI.
The workshop is geared toward turf and landscape professionals, county and municipal park maintenance teams, golf course lawn care professionals, professional arborists, golf course superintendents and staff, Master Gardeners, and more; homeowners are also welcome to attend. We’re offering Master Gardeners and Dane County employees a 20% discount on registration, and students receive a 50% discount.
