Editorial: No to Scorched Earth -Journal Sentinel OnlineThe battle against the ash borer has arrived in Wisconsin, and state officials have adopted a management plan that has more hope of success than the failed federal policies that have so far been unable to halt the march of the invasive pest. The state plan may not succeed; not much has, so far. But officials are being flexible in their thinking and appear to be doing their best against a stubborn foe. Girding for War with the Ash Borer - Wisconsin State JournalThe insect has no natural predators, but experts hope to come up with some or with a pesticide that works. Residents Question Experts on Ash Borer -Journal Sentinel OnlineResidents, woodland owners, municipal foresters, arborists, loggers, firewood dealers and others met with state agency experts to learn how emerald ash borer could affect their cherished trees, their budgets and their livelihoods. Rare Wasp & EAB -Timmins Daily Press - Ontario, CanadaA rare species of sand wasp found in Windsor is being used to combat the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer, which has killed more than 20 million ash trees in North America. Firewood Restrictions [exit DNR] Invasive Beetle Could Take 1 in 4 City Trees -LaCrosseTribune.comA tiny insect recently discovered in two Wisconsin counties could wipe out nearly a quarter of La Crosse’s trees if it gets this far. EAB Quarantine Grows - GreenBayPressgazette.comTimber, firewood and ash nursery stock are among the materials banned from being moved out of Washington and Ozaukee counties after the emerald ash borer was found there. Ash Borer Focus Turns to Control -Milwuakee Journal SentinelThe threat of emerald ash borer has hung over Wisconsin in recent years. Now that it’s here, what should you do? Professionals say no treatments are certain; homeowners still have some options. Insecticides on the market have shown mixed results in protecting ash trees from being killed by the insect, but some new products and techniques offer encouraging results. Beloit Response to EABAfter an infestation of emerald ash borers was confirmed in Ozaukee County late last week, Beloit city officials are making sure they are prepared for a similar situation here. September 15th Deadline for USDA State & Private Forestry GrantsWisconsin DNR has recently received guidance for the next round of the 2009 State & Private Forestry Grant Proposals from the USDA Forest Service. These 50-50 cost-share grants are for projects with large-scale impact towards achieving Forest Service goals in the areas of urban forestry, forest stewardship, fire and forest health. There are two funding categories: large projects with a minimum federal share of $200,000 and smaller projects with a minimum federal share of $20,000. While the state can directly apply for this funding, other organizations can also apply through the Wisconsin DNR Forestry Division. Pre-proposals from Wisconsin must be submitted to DNR Forestry no later than September 15, 2008. South Central & Southeast Regions Forest Pest UpdateTopics in this update:
