Conferences & SeminarsValue of Carbon Offset Spending? - New York TimesMore than $54 million was spent in the U.S. last year on carbon offset credits toward tree planting, wind farms, solar plants and other projects. But where exactly is that money going? Carbon Offset Spending [exit DNR] The Greenest Tree - Slate.comWhat kind of tree will soak up the most carbon? Comment Requested - EAB PesticideComments are needed by April 14 on a proposed special pesticide registration proposed by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture to control emerald ash borer larvae in ash trees. Should the emerald ash borer be identified in Wisconsin, the special pesticide registration would offer another option to control this destructive wood-boring pest that threatens ash trees located in urban areas, parks, or tree nurseries. EAB Pesticide - Wisconsin [exit DNR] Appleton Trees Set State Records - Post Crescent.comWhen Lee Eckholm lived in California, she marveled at the size of that state's redwoods, the world's biggest trees. So it's no surprise that Eckholm has outside her dining room window a view of a box elder tree, affectionately called "the big guy" by family members, recently found to be the largest of its kind in Wisconsin. Another Weapon In the EAB ArsenalResearch at Michigan State University (MSU) has shown that a new insecticide product, which will be sold as Tree-äge™, was “remarkably effective” in controlling EAB, reports Deborah McCullough, MSU forest entomologist and EAB researcher. The Michigan Department of Agriculture approved a special registration for the product for use in ash trees for controlling EAB. It has also been used on fruit and vegetable crops. WDNR EAB Web ResourcesThe WDNR forest health web pages on EAB have been recently updated and expanded. New content includes an expanded section on management and an improved reference section. The FAQ's have been redesigned and there are now direct links to DNR EAB publications, Webcasts and Videos. China's Ash May Hold Solution - Chicago TribuneResearchers still see a future for the ash tree, and they believe it lies somewhere in the Chinese countryside. Six years after the emerald ash borer was first spotted in the Midwest, researchers are turning their attention across the globe, to the region where the tiny, metallic-green beetle originated. Maryland Battles EAB - Baltimore SunThe Maryland Department of Agriculture is opening a new front in its war against the emerald ash borer. In the next few weeks, the state will begin hanging insect traps along roadsides in Western Maryland. Smart Growth GrantsThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting applications for free technical assistance under the Smart Growth Implementation Assistance Program. This program provides contractor support to communities, regions, or states that want help with either policy analysis or public participatory processes. Selected communities will receive assistance in the form of a multi-day visit from a team of experts organized by EPA and other national partners to work with local leaders.
