Arborists from the Wisconsin Arborists Association
19 certified arborists from the Wisconsin Arborist Association (WAA) donated their time to help Mequon Nature Preserve (MNP) eradicate buckthorn as a way to give back to the community. Companies represented were, Wachtel Tree Science and Service, Second Nature Landscaping, Crain Tree and Landscaping, Buckley Tree Service, Lied's, Natural Habitat as well as We Energies, the Department of Natural Resources, Milwaukee area Technical College-Mequon Campus, and Wisconsin Arborist Association. WAA and MNP plan to make this an annual event and encourage more and more companies to participate! With the help of students from Cedarburg high school and Concordia University as well as volunteers from MNP--over 3/4 of a mile of buckthorn was eradicated. Great job!

ISA Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist Scholarship

The International Society of Arboriculture is pleased to offer an ISA Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist scholarship for those willing to share their knowledge with the public. In cooperation with the Society of Municipal Arborists, and with funding provided by the U.S. Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program, scholarships will be awarded to cover fees involved in earning the Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist credential.

ISA will cover the cost of the exam, membership to either ISA and local chapter or ISA and SMA, and the Municipal Specialist study guide. In exchange, once the individual has passed the exam, the newly certified arborist/municipal specialist will work with the State Urban Forestry Coordinators to provide a project to the community and educate volunteers, schools and government officials on proper tree care. This grant program is targeted to communities without enough resources to obtain a municipal arborist or urban forester, or where this is not already an ISA Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist working with the local community.

Any ISA Certified Arborist working for a municipality is eligible. Candidates must meet the necessary experience requirement to become a certified arborist/municipal specialist in order to apply and can review ISA’s Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist application online at www.isa-arbor.com or by contacting the ISA certification department at cert@isa-arbor.com or (217) 355-9411.

Traps to Survey for EAB -The News Democrat

The Ohio Department of Agriculture announced it will be setting traps throughout Brown and surrounding counties to check for emerald ash borers. The one-foot by two-foot purple traps will be hung near ash trees every 1.5 miles across the county. The traps are designed to survey the area to see if ash borers are present, not to capture and eliminate them. The beetles are attracted to the traps using a scented lure.

Nominees must be the prime mover of a service activity and have demonstrated positive spirit and high moral purpose in accomplishing their goals. Nominees must be nominated by a responsible adult who has solid knowledge of the young person's heroic activities and is not related to the nominee.

The ten national winners will each receive $2,000 to support their service work or higher education. Application deadline is April 30.

Electrical Hazards Awareness Program (EHAP)

Electricity is a serious and widespread hazard to the arborist. Electricity causes about 30 percent of the fatalities in the tree care industry, making it the leading cause of worker fatality. One doesn't have to touch a wire to be electrocuted, and about half of all electrocution fatalities are the result of indirect contact.

Tree Care Industry Association will be conducting a free EHAP workshop on April 30, 2008 at Mid State Technical College Auditorium in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. All necessary EHAP program materials will be provided at no cost. A nominal fee may be charged for lunch and refreshments.

Tree Talk: Live Online Webcast Series

Alliance for Community Trees (ACT) announces its topics for the 2008 webcast series. The Brown Bag Lunch Series is a monthly webcast held (third Thursday of each month) at the lunch hour. The goal is to provide informal training opportunities for local urban and community forestry practitioners. The trainings highlight successful programs and practices that you may want to adapt in your communities.

The series is geared for volunteer organizers, community groups, and others who work with the public. While the webcasts are open to all, the content is most likely to be of interest to those who work directly with the public, volunteers, or youth. Sessions are planned to last no more than one hour, with two presenters speaking on the same topic from slightly different perspectives, each for 10-15 minutes, followed by 10-15 minutes of questions and answers. The Brown Bag Lunch Series is made possible through support from The Home Depot Foundation and partnership with the USDA Forest Service.
