Forest acreage

The area of timberland in the Mississippi River GMU has increased by 21,800 acres or 95% in the past decade. The most recent survey (2001-2005) indicates that productive forest land makes up about 44,800 acres or 29% of the total land area of the GMU.

Forest types

Since much of the Mississippi River GMU is floodplain, bottomland forest types (mainly silver maple/american elm and cottonwood) account for 58% of timberland acreage. Oak-dominated types make up 25% and hard maple-domianted types make up 13% of acreage.

Growing stock volume

Total growing stock volume in the Mississippi River GMU is 119 million cubic feet. Silver maple accounts for 68% and northern red oak accounts for 13% of growing stock volume.

Ratio of growth to removals

Net annual removals in the Mississippi River GMU were negligible while annual growth accounted for about 2.3 million cubic feet or 1.9% of standing volume.

Habitat type

The majority (63%) of the forested landscape in the Mississippi River GMU is classified as lowland.

Timberland ownership

Only one third of timberland in the Mississippi River GMU is privately owned. The majority (66%) is owned by the state and federal government.
