Forest acreage

The area of timberland in the Milwaukee River GMU has increased by about 4,800 acres or 6% over the past decade. The most recent survey (2001-2005) indicates that productive forest land makes up about 87,230 acres or 15% of the total land area of the GMU.

Forest types

Hard maple-dominated forest types account for 21% of timberland acreage and bottomland types make up another 36% (mainly sugarberry/hackberry/elm/green ash, black ash/ american elm/red maple and tamarack).

Growing stock volume

Total growing stock volume in the Lower Wisconsin GMU is 1.2 billion cubic feet. Northern red and white oak each account for about 14% of volume. All oak species together account for 36% of growing stock volume.

Ratio of growth to removals

Net annual growth (48.6 million cubic feet) in the Lower Wisconsin GMU exceeded annual removals (16.3 million cubic feet) by 198%. Annual growth accounted for about 4.1% of standing volume.

Habitat type

Almost one third of the timberland is classified as undefined (meaning that the land is too disturbed to classify) most likely due to forestland fragementation and the influence of urban development. Another third of forested acreage is classified as either mesic-wet mesic or lowland.
