Wisconsin Fire Indices

National Fire Danger Rating (NFDRS) indices and the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS) indices are used by fire managers as a tool to analyze wildfire potential on any given day.

The indices are based upon fuel and environmental conditions obtained from twenty-six weather stations throughout the state of Wisconsin. These weather stations are a compilation of eighteen stations owned by the state of Wisconsin, five stations owned by the U.S. Forest Service, two stations owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and one station owned by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In addition, two stations owned and operated in the state of Minnesota are used to help support the northwestern portion of Wisconsin.

The primary function of these indices is to help fire managers develop appropriate resource staffing levels which help to protect valuable forest land, property, and life in and around wildland areas. A secondary function of the indices is to allow fire managers to analyze historical conditions to better understand past fire events and identify trends in fire weather patterns. Another function of these indices is to allow fire personnel throughout the state access to current and expected fire conditions in their work areas and adjoining work areas to increase situational awareness about fire weather and fuel conditions. Through these functions, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources uses NFDRS and CFFDRS to protect the natural resources of the state of Wisconsin.

This information is used in conjunction with the Fire Weather Index System to calculate expected fire behavior. This data is distributed to fire managers as an aid to fire suppression management, planning and suppression efforts. This information is based on the 12:00 CST weather readings (1pm daylight savings time) and next day forecasted conditions. The earlier fire managers receive warnings of potentially hazardous situations, the better prepared they will be.
