Suppression Program Grants

(ss. 26.30(2) and (5), 28.01, and 28.07, Wis. Stats.; s. NR 47.9, Wis. Admin. Code)

Counties are eligible to apply for grants to fund their participation in the Suppression Program, provided they have designated a local coordinator. Federal cost-sharing may be provided by the U.S. Forest Service. Tribal, federal and state lands apply through their county's program, just as all other landowners or communities in the county would do.

Up to 50% of the expenses directly relevant to the suppression program, aerial spray, and administrative costs will be cost-shared based on the amount of funding received from the US Forest Service.

Eligible treatment blocks must meet the following criteria:

  • Be of at least 20 contiguous acres in a compact and regular shape.
  • Have canopy coverage of either:
    • 25 percent or more on residential or high use public recreational land.
    • 50 percent or more on rural land.
  • 50 percent or more of the canopy must be of the insect's preferred hosts listed in the Guide to Applying for the DNR Gypsy Moth Suppression Program [PDF, 302KB].
  • Have the following minimum average number of egg masses per acre as estimated by survey methods described in the application materials and guide:
    • 500 egg masses per acre on residential or high use, public recreational land.
    • 1000 egg masses per acre on rural land.

Applications are due from counties by the first Friday in December (a list of the documentation required for a complete application is provided in the Guide to Applying for the DNR Gypsy Moth Suppression Program [PDF, 302KB]). Expense worksheets are due July 15. Public Notification Response Log sheets and payments for total cost of aerial spray are due April 1.
